Common Prompt Engineering Questions
What makes a good AI prompt? ›
A strong prompt has four qualities: clarity (unambiguous task definition), specificity (concrete constraints and format requirements), context (background the AI needs), and role framing (who the AI should be in this conversation). Score high on all four and your outputs become dramatically more usable.
Why does my AI give vague or generic answers? ›
Vague outputs reflect vague inputs. "Write a marketing email" yields a template. "Write a 200-word cold email to a CFO at a 50-person SaaS company, leading with the average cost of manual reconciliation" yields something you can send. The grader shows exactly which dimension is dragging your results down.
Does this work for ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini? ›
Yes. The four dimensions — clarity, specificity, context depth, and role framing — apply to any large language model. Prompt engineering fundamentals are model-agnostic. Claude responds especially well to context depth; ChatGPT is more tolerant of underspecified prompts.
What score should I aim for? ›
A score of 75+ gets you reliably good outputs. A score of 85+ gets you outputs you can use with minimal editing. Most first-draft prompts score 30–55. The goal here is to understand which specific improvements have the biggest impact.
This grader uses a heuristic scoring model trained on prompt engineering principles. It does not call an external AI API — all scoring is local and instant. Scores are estimates and should be used as a diagnostic tool, not a definitive rating. SigmaFoundry is not affiliated with OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google.
